BMPDesign BMPDesign - the European Automotive Specialists.Your source for BMW Parts, MINI Parts and all other fine European Automobile Parts. http://www.bmpdesign.com/ Our project for today is dealing with the drive ability issue on a MINI Cooper with CVT Transmission. If you have one of these cars, most likely your biggest complaint is poor drive ability from the standing start up to about 30-40 miles an hour. What's happening with this vehicle is, you don't get full throttle although you're pushing the gas all the way to the floor, and you don't get full throttle till you hit actually 50 miles an hour. So full throttle meaning full throttle plate opening doesn't happen. You get about half to three-quarters at most. What the Sprint Booster does which is a small module that goes inline between the gas pedal and the ECU, it gives you full throttle regardless of your engine speed or your road speed. So what you're going to do with this is it's a small installation, it goes behind the pedal assembly. It goes inline with the wiring harness that goes to ECU. And now what we're going to do is show you how it's done. Installing the Sprint Booster on your MINI Cooper is about the easiest and simplest performance upgrade you'll ever do on your car. What you're going to need to do is remove the pedal assembly to install the Sprint Booster unit. And to do that you're going to take a small sharp object and remove this little protective hidden plug here right at the base of the pedal assembly. Once you're there, you're going to take a 5 mm Allen Wrench and you'll remove the 6 mm bolt that's located right in that opening. Once you've got the bolt out, what you're going to do is lift the pedal straight up, and still locate it underneath at the floor board and once it moves up about an inch to an inch-and-a-half, it will dislocate itself from the vehicle. There is enough wire on the drive by wire system to allow you to roll the pedal assembly over. You'll notice that there is a plug connector right here and that plug connector will have the factory wire attached to it. What you're going to do is you're going to disconnect the factory wire, and then what you're going to do is plug the factory wire directly into the back side of the Sprint Booster. Then what you're going to do is to take the Sprint Booster wire and plug it directly into the pedal assembly. You'll then roll the unit over again, make sure your wire is tucked out of the way, reinstall your bolt and your plastic plug and you're ready to go. Better understand how the Sprint Booster works. It's important that you understand how the vehicle itself works. All vehicles up to about 2001 were basically a cable operated acceleration system and the pedal basically had a cable or linkage assembly, that went over to the throttle body and when you depressed the pedal assembly, it pulled on the cable and opened the throttle plate. The way the new vehicles operate is -- it's an electronic pedal assembly which has a rheostat build inside of it, and then the factory wire harness plugs into it. It goes to your ECU, the ECU conditions that information and then sends it over to an electronic solenoid that operates your throttle plate at that point. The advantage is to that is, they can operate the cruise control, the traction control can all operate through the system via the control unit. The disadvantages are the control unit actually controls the speed that the throttle plate would open. When you depress the accelerator on an electronic control system, the speed that you accelerate is not proportionate to the speed this throttle plate opened, that's the throttle position angle. Some vehicles even have a system where you don't open the throttle to the full wide open position until the vehicle reaches approximately 20 miles an hour. This means that if you depress the gas to the floor, if the car is only at about 10 miles an hour or so, it does not open the throttle plate away. What the Sprint Booster does is it conditions the signal that comes from the pedal and amplifies it. So you get full throttle even at zero speed or at slow speed and it makes the throttle response much crisper, much faster that's more instantaneous, when you depress the gas on the floor, you're getting a full open of the actual throttle plate, and that's how the Sprint Booster works. HomeAboutContact usContributors You are here: Home / Cars / Mini Cooper CVT Review: A Mini Experience Mini Cooper CVT Review: A Mini Experience June 29, 2008 By Philp Shoulder Leave a Comment Ever since I was a schoolboy, Minis have captured my imagination. So much so that after passing my driving test I was sure a Mini would be my first set of wheels. When my parents decided an Austin Metro was a more suitable alternative, it was a bitter disappointment, as the Metro possessed none of the Mini’s cheeky fun appeal.Fast forward to 2008 and I was in the market once again for a replacement car. My 2001 Vauxhall Astra automatic had given me stirling service for the past five years, but after 75,000 miles I yearned for a fresh driving experience.
My interest in Mini ownership was rekindled after the new Mini’s launch in 2001, although their prestige price tag had prevented them being on my shopping list. Only recently have second hand prices significantly fallen, as Minis seem to hold on to their residual value like nothing else. This is partly due to their inherited prestige from parent company BMW, in addition to the fact that new prices are not discounted by Mini dealerships. A budget of £6,000 to £8,000 limited me to older higher mileage cars.
My search began and I found the main franchised dealers were typically asking around £8,000 for a 2004, 40,000 mile Cooper. Second hand private cars could be got for less, but many I looked at were shabby and most were older examples.
To make matters more complicated, I was in the market for an automatic. Although considered by many as dulling the driving excitement, I find automatic transmission a real boon in coping with London’s traffic-congested roads. My previous three cars had been automatics, and I was now smitten.
This brought about several issues. Cooper Automatics carry a £1000 premium over manual cars. Also, the Mini options list is practically endless and even equipment that you might think would be inclusive is a costly option. Take basic air conditioning – standard on many cheaper cars from Ford, Vauxhall and Nissan, but a £600 option on the Mini Cooper. Even an alarm would set you back an additional £200. Perhaps this is no surprise, as BMW has historically been stingy on providing standard equipment with its cars. Not so long ago customers had to pay a premium just to get a radio!
The ability for owners’ to customise has been one of Mini’s key appeals. The idea being that no one Mini is identical – which is all very well and good – but in reality it means it is incredibly difficult to get a second-hand car at the right spec with the right mileage at the right price.
Undeterred, I arranged a test drive at my local Mini dealership. The car in question was a 2003 Cooper CVT Automatic with 40,000 miles on the clock. This particular example had been considerably specced-up with the Chilli Pack, which gave it cloth and leather upholstered sports seats, leather gear knob and steering wheel. It had also been fitted with additional options, including 5-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels at £780, and sports suspension.
The first thing I noticed was the harshness of the Mini’s ride. No doubt the bigger 17-inch wheels, and sports suspension did not help, but I was astounded at how uncomfortable it was. Noise was also an issue, with lots of thumping and rattling emanating from the rear. Admittedly the handling did seem surefooted, although the steering on the car I tested didn’t seem to possess the directness and magic communicative qualities that are so often raved about in the press.
The biggest bugbear however, was the CVT (Controlled Variator Transmission) automatic gearbox, which differs from conventional automatics by replacing the use of gears and layshafts used in traditional transmissions, with two hydraulically controlled variable-diameter pulleys.
It was a huge disappointment. There are no gear changes, and this lack of graduation of engine noise seemed strangely peculiar. Accompanying the sound of the engine was a wheezy noise of the transmission – not at all sporty. The car seemed to hesitate and lurch at slow speeds and the slushy, unresponsive transmission, also robbed the engine of the sparkle that is reportedly present in the normal 5 speed manual Cooper, making this automatic model unrewarding to drive – a problem which had obviously been noted by BMW – as the CVT option has now been dropped on the revised 2006 Mini, and was never offered on the sportier Cooper S version.
The figures speak for themselves and highlight the Automatic Mini’s significantly inferior performance and economy. CVT Auto: 0.60: 10.1 seconds Top speed: 115 mph, combined mpg 36.7 Manual: 0.60: 8.9 seconds Top speed
125 mph, combined mpg 42.2.
Perhaps my disillusionment came from expecting the Cooper to be fun to drive when mated to an automatic gearbox. I have since learned that to really experience the undiluted driving pleasure afforded by the Mini Cooper, you need to go for the standard manual gearbox. The choice of wheels and tyres can also significantly affect ride comfort.
Just as when I was 17, I was looking to sample the Mini magic of sharp steering and go-kart handling. Back then I wouldn’t have been concerned about the severely restricted rear seat space and tiny boot, more akin to two-seat sportscars. Now however, I was looking for a practical hatchback that drove like a small sportscar. With the Cooper CVT, I found neither. Comfort and practicality where not words in my 17 year old vocabulary – perhaps they are now.
