Andy Enright ReportsUnless youve been stuck in a cultural vacuum for the last couple of years, you should by now be very familiar with the MINI range. Starts with the One, graduates to Cooper and is topped off by supercharged Cooper S, you know the routine. Then there are the hardtop and convertible bodystyles as well as the diesel engine in the One D. Whats less well known is that the One and The Cooper are available with an innovative Steptronic CVT transmission. Get ready for the science bit. Build Comfort Depreciation Economy Equipment Handling Insurance Performance Styling Value Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVT) arent all that new. Remember the little DAF 66 Variomatic from the seventies? That used what was ostensibly an oversized rubber band running between two pulleys with sloping surfaces. One of the pulleys connected to the engine output, the other to the drive shafts. Each pulley was made of two pieces and when pushed together the sloped surfaces would cause the pulleys diameter to grow. This changed the effective gearing and meant that the little DAF could do away with a conventional gearbox. It had, in effect, an infinite number of gears. So far, so complicated. The problem with these gearboxes was the so-called rubber band effect. When you pressed the throttle pedal, the engine automatically revved to its maximum power output, the engine noise rising instantly with the cars actual acceleration slowly catching up. This gave a nasty slipping clutch effect which proved very unpopular with most drivers who preferred to equate their road speed with the noise their engine was making."You can knock the selector to the right and nudge the car between any of the six-ratios in true touring car style."Another significant problem with this system was that in cars with any useful torque, the elastic band would blow its brains out so for years CVTs were only available on shopping trolleys like the Fiat Uno Selecta or the Subaru Justy. It was only with the advent of steel belts instead of rubber ones that CVT gearboxes could make the big leap forward. Audis Multitronic gearbox mated a CVT to big power and MG Rovers Steptronic was similarly effective. Stump up a premium of £1,050 over the sticker price of a manual MINI One or Cooper and you can get a version of the Steptronic box fitted. This gearbox gets around the dreaded elastic band effect by having six artificially mandated gears rather than one continuous ratio. The gearstick that sprouts from the floor can be left in an automatic mode, where it replicates the actions of a normal torque converter-equipped automatic gearbox quite well, or you can knock the selector to the right and nudge the car between any of the six-ratios in true touring car style sequential and forward for downchanges, backward for upshifts. Its still amazing how many manufacturers get this system round the wrong way! Steptronic steering wheel paddles represent an affordable option at £50. Two different driving modes are offered, normal and sport. When in sport mode, the engine hangs on to each gear a little longer, but the electronics dont do anything particularly fancy to the stability control system or the damping. Fuel economy for both cars is quoted a 7.7 litres per 100km travelled which in old money translates as an average of 37 miles per gallon. Carbon dioxide emissions are quoted as 187 grammes per kilometre. The MINI One with the CVT gearbox will accelerate to 60mph in 12.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 106mph while the 115bhp Cooper will cover the sprint in 10.2 seconds and hit a terminal velocity of 115mph. The CVT gearchange in many ways typifies the MINI an old idea brought resolutely up to date. Everywhere you look about the car the same theme continues. Clamber underneath the retro body and youll spot BMWs Z-axle multi-link rear suspension. Theres a wrap-around glasshouse with glazed in side pillars featuring fully flush panes. This creates a floating-roof effect which can be emphasised by the Coopers options of having the roof painted in black or white. Like the original, the interior of the MINI is still somewhat cramped, and retro themes abound, from the chrome detailing to the cavernous door bins. The centrally mounted speedometer, winged MINI badging and honeycomb mesh grille on the Cooper all act as visual throwbacks to the Fifties. Other changes have a distinctly modern touch. The laughable boot of the original Mini has been replaced by a more practical hatchback arrangement. Some rather cheap silver-painted plastics are used in the interior, as the original aluminium fittings were ditched on the grounds of cost. Other proposed touches such as the sixties-style starter button and stalk-mounted hazard lights also got the chop due to pricing concerns, showing how tight profit margins are even in this potentially lucrative market sector. Certain items are must-haves, such as airbags and ABS-equipped disc brakes all round. In certain respects, the Cooper shoots wide of the mark regarding voguish Citycars. At a time when tall and narrow represents the state of the art, the MINI is more state of the ark unashamedly squat, with bulging rear wheelarch extensions and a raking, low roofline. Many will feel that the Steptronic CVT gearbox doesnt ring true with authentic historical resonance. The MINI always was a manual car and theres an argument that says it always should be. Its only when you realise how user friendly the system is that its qualities shine through. Perhaps its biggest bugbear is the price. In making the MINIs price so aggressive, the money asked for the Steptronic box and multifunction steering wheel suddenly looks a significant slice of the pie for debatable benefits. Whilst Id stick with a stick shift, those who subscribe to the history is bunk philosophy might quite fancy the CVT gearbox.FACTS AT A GLANCE CAR: MINI CVT range PRICE: £12,045 - £13,445 - on the road INSURANCE GROUP: 5-8 CO2 EMISSIONS: 187g/km PERFORMANCE: [Cooper] Max Speed 115mph / 0-60mph 10.2s FUEL CONSUMPTION: [One] 37mpg (combined) STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Twin front and side airbags WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: Length/Width/Height 3626/1925/1396mm WHO TO SEE: July 4th 2005 Send by Messenger Email this article Print More news and reviews from Mini More motoring news Message Boards - Talk about it Latest Videos Latest Message Board Threads Got an opinion? Home » Back Room » Motoring discussion View Threaded Thu 25 Jun 2009 11:37 Automatics - CVT or Tiptronic? - Alanovich I'm just having a scout around autotrader for used automatic Mini convertibles (for future reference - may well get one in a couple of years, or even sooner if our Smart Roadster proves to be unfixable as per my previous thread about the gear selector being up the spout). Some adverts say "Automatic CVT", others say "Tiptronic". Is it the case that Mini have sold models with both types of transmission? If so, are there specific model variants which have CVT, others which have Tiptronic? Or could any variant be ordered with either gearbox? Or is there only one type of auto transmission, and some advertisers don't know what they're talking about and selected the wrong type of transmission wording? Also, does anyone have any experience of driving automatic Minis (talking about the BMW jobs here, not the old proper Minis)? I like Tiptronic autos, not so sure about CVTs never having driven one. Cheers! "Tiptronic" is a term more usually associated with Porsche Automatics, but BMW used it for this gearbox as well. I've driven a manual MINI but not an auto. (It was wonderful, of course). I ran a car with CVT transmission for 120,000 miles. (Not a MINI though.) It was faultless and easy to drive. And yet......I still can't come to terms with CVT transmission. There is just something about it that makes me uneasy. Reply to this message | Report message as offensive | Link Thu 25 Jun 2009 12:14 Automatics - CVT or Tiptronic? - perro The Mini One and Mini Cooper were available with a continuously variable transmission or with a conventional Midlands five-speed manual transmission (model year 2001-2004), later replaced with a Getrag five-speed unit for 2005 onwards. The Cooper S comes with a six-speed Getrag manual or (from the 2005 model year onwards) a fully automatic transmission with paddle shifters ~ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MINI_(BMW) Reply to this message | Report message as offensive | Link Thu 25 Jun 2009 12:39 Automatics - CVT or Tiptronic? - Alanovich Great, thanks both. I'm more interested in a car with an automatic transmission with clutchless manual option, so would I be right in saying that to achieve this I would need to get a 2005+ Cooper S as it's the only variant with this option? Are all other Mini variant from 2005 on with an automatic gearbox still CVTs? Cheers again. Reply to this message | Report message as offensive | Link Thu 25 Jun 2009 12:58 Automatics - CVT or Tiptronic? - LikedDrivingOnce You can get a MINI One with Automatic transmission and "flappy paddles" on the steering wheel. Can't see the point. The Auto box on my car lets me change gear manually if I want - but I don't want. That's why I bought an auto in the first place. It can do the work. You don't keep a dog and bark yourself! Reply to this message | Report message as offensive | Link Thu 25 Jun 2009 13:05 Automatics - CVT or Tiptronic? - Alanovich All three of our current cars are semi automatics - I enjoy using the manual option out on open A and B-roads, and usually stay automatic round town or on the motorway. I also appreciated the option to shift down the gears manually during the recent winter when negotiating icy/snowy hills. I can't get in to town from my house without going down a pretty steep hill. Reply to this message | Report message as offensive | Link Thu 25 Jun 2009 14:39 Automatics - CVT or Tiptronic? - Optimist I'd have thought that a CVT operating properly would "select" just the right ratio when you went down a hill. IIRC more recent CVT's are programmed to down shift to provide an element of engine braking you don't get on a conventional auto. Can't say whether or not this applies to the Mini. The "tiptronic" on a CVT usually means you can manually select virtual ratios within the CVT range to simulate use of a gear box. Reply to this message | Report message as offensive | Link Thu 25 Jun 2009 14:46 Automatics - CVT or Tiptronic? - Alanovich Ah. So I take it this means CVT Minis have a manual change option? I hadn't considered this a possibility with CVTs on any car. Reply to this message | Report message as offensive | Link Thu 25 Jun 2009 14:51 Automatics - CVT or Tiptronic? - Optimist That's what the CVT does on my Nissan, ie manual "tiptronic" selection of 6 virtual ratios to over-ride the CVT. Can be fun when used in overtaking but, as I say, the CVT is also cleverly programmed so that you are aware of the engine braking from a lower ratio on a dowhill slope. Can't speak for the Mini but I wouldn't be surprised. Edited by Optimist on 25/06/2009 at 14:53 Reply to this message | Report message as offensive | Link Thu 25 Jun 2009 15:01 Automatics - CVT or Tiptronic? - Alanovich Thanks. Sounds interesting. If we sold our Smart Roadster and Mazda 6 we'd have enough in the pot for a a 2006ish Mini Convertible. BMPDesign BMPDesign - the European Automotive Specialists.Your source for BMW Parts, MINI Parts and all other fine European Automobile Parts. http://www.bmpdesign.com/ Our project for today is dealing with the drive ability issue on a MINI Cooper with CVT Transmission. If you have one of these cars, most likely your biggest complaint is poor drive ability from the standing start up to about 30-40 miles an hour. What's happening with this vehicle is, you don't get full throttle although you're pushing the gas all the way to the floor, and you don't get full throttle till you hit actually 50 miles an hour. So full throttle meaning full throttle plate opening doesn't happen. You get about half to three-quarters at most. What the Sprint Booster does which is a small module that goes inline between the gas pedal and the ECU, it gives you full throttle regardless of your engine speed or your road speed. So what you're going to do with this is it's a small installation, it goes behind the pedal assembly. It goes inline with the wiring harness that goes to ECU. And now what we're going to do is show you how it's done. Installing the Sprint Booster on your MINI Cooper is about the easiest and simplest performance upgrade you'll ever do on your car. What you're going to need to do is remove the pedal assembly to install the Sprint Booster unit. And to do that you're going to take a small sharp object and remove this little protective hidden plug here right at the base of the pedal assembly. Once you're there, you're going to take a 5 mm Allen Wrench and you'll remove the 6 mm bolt that's located right in that opening. Once you've got the bolt out, what you're going to do is lift the pedal straight up, and still locate it underneath at the floor board and once it moves up about an inch to an inch-and-a-half, it will dislocate itself from the vehicle. There is enough wire on the drive by wire system to allow you to roll the pedal assembly over. You'll notice that there is a plug connector right here and that plug connector will have the factory wire attached to it. What you're going to do is you're going to disconnect the factory wire, and then what you're going to do is plug the factory wire directly into the back side of the Sprint Booster. Then what you're going to do is to take the Sprint Booster wire and plug it directly into the pedal assembly. You'll then roll the unit over again, make sure your wire is tucked out of the way, reinstall your bolt and your plastic plug and you're ready to go. Better understand how the Sprint Booster works. It's important that you understand how the vehicle itself works. All vehicles up to about 2001 were basically a cable operated acceleration system and the pedal basically had a cable or linkage assembly, that went over to the throttle body and when you depressed the pedal assembly, it pulled on the cable and opened the throttle plate. The way the new vehicles operate is -- it's an electronic pedal assembly which has a rheostat build inside of it, and then the factory wire harness plugs into it. It goes to your ECU, the ECU conditions that information and then sends it over to an electronic solenoid that operates your throttle plate at that point. The advantage is to that is, they can operate the cruise control, the traction control can all operate through the system via the control unit. The disadvantages are the control unit actually controls the speed that the throttle plate would open. When you depress the accelerator on an electronic control system, the speed that you accelerate is not proportionate to the speed this throttle plate opened, that's the throttle position angle. Some vehicles even have a system where you don't open the throttle to the full wide open position until the vehicle reaches approximately 20 miles an hour. This means that if you depress the gas to the floor, if the car is only at about 10 miles an hour or so, it does not open the throttle plate away. What the Sprint Booster does is it conditions the signal that comes from the pedal and amplifies it. So you get full throttle even at zero speed or at slow speed and it makes the throttle response much crisper, much faster that's more instantaneous, when you depress the gas on the floor, you're getting a full open of the actual throttle plate, and that's how the Sprint Booster works.
