That model scored points with the best netbook keyboard we've seen and a solid metal construction -- but the wimpy VIA processor (and a higher price than other netbooks) kept it from being a top contender. The Mini 1000 will be available in the UK in mid-February 2009 for approximately £400.Design This new consumer version has a nearly identical design, but in lightweight plastic and with a slightly thinner body. The large, comfortable keyboard remains -- and is the Mini 1000's best feature -- while the CPU has been upgraded from the Via C7-M to the Intel Atom. Our review model featured a 60GB (spinning) hard drive -- this will be sold in the UK with a Vivienne Tam designer livery, pictured above. Models with 8GB or 16GB solid-state drives will be available for the same price, but with a more staid black chassis. We're dubious of HP's bizarrely proprietary 'HP Mini Mobile Drive' slot, which is basically a recessed USB port into which only specially branded HP USB drives can fit. We'd happily trade this slot for a media card reader or ExpressCard slot. Without it, we might have been able to get separate headphone and mic jacks -- as it is, you get only one shared audio connection. Still, the actual hands-on experience is the best of any netbook we've tested so far, making it well worth a look for anyone interested in jumping into the netbook arena, especially those who dread spending time typing on cramped keyboards. The Mini 1000's footprint is nearly identical to that of the earlier HP 2133 Mini-Note PC, measuring slightly wider and thinner. It's also a little lighter, thanks to the switch from aluminium to plastic. Netbooks are designed with price and portability in mind, so they're usually not the fanciest designs to come out of a PC-maker's lab. While an aluminium chassis is generally preferred to one made from plastic, the switch to plastic here makes sense because every penny and gram counts. Overall, we appreciate the Mini 1000's efficient and attractive layout -- there's hardly any dead space on the keyboard tray. Features The biggest selling point for the Mini 1000 is its fantastic keyboard, which HP claims is 92 per cent of the size of a full-size laptop keyboard. Other Netbooks have been plagued by tiny Chiclet-like keys, which make typing a pain and typos plentiful. By expanding the keyboard right to the edges of the system, HP was able to fit bigger keys into the tray than other netbooks and even ultraportable laptops. The result is a comfortable typing experience that beats even Dell's Inspiron Mini 9.The 10.2-inch widescreen LCD display offers a 1,024x600-pixel native resolution, which is standard for netbooks. It's certainly readable, but most documents and Web pages will require some scrolling. The display is covered by the same edge-to-edge glass that we saw in Apple's new MacBooks, which adds to the aesthetic, but is also a glare magnet. The Mini 1000 has fewer ports and connections than many other netbooks, but the two USB ports should be enough for most users. The Dell Inspiron Mini 9, in comparison, has three USB ports, plus separate headphone and mic jacks, while the HP has only a single switchable audio jack. We wouldn't mind so much, but HP felt the need to include a proprietary recessed USB jack for use with the company's HP Mini Mobile Drive -- basically an elongated USB memory stick. We'd rather the chassis space and hardware costs go into another USB port, video output or even a separate mic jack. Performance Intel's single-core 1.6GHz Atom CPU offers enough computing power for the basic tasks for which netbooks are designed -- namely Web surfing, working on documents and some basic multimedia playback. That combo of Intel's Atom CPU, 1GB of RAM, and Windows XP (a Linux version of the Mini 1000 will be released in early 2009) is found in almost every current netbook, so it's not surprising that we saw no real performance difference between the Mini 1000 and the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 or Lenovo IdeaPad S10. Any of these are fine for basic on-the-go computing, as long as you keep your expectations modest. We were concerned about the system's battery life, since it only has a three-cell battery. Other three-cell netbooks, including the Lenovo Ideapad S10, ran for only about 2 hours on our video playback battery drain test. But we were pleased to get 2 hours and 44 minutes from the Mini 1000, which should be closer to our three-hour recommendation in casual use.ConclusionHP may have arrived late to the consumer netbook game, but by lifting the generous keyboard from last year's business-oriented model, the Mini 1000 easily joins the category's top tier. And with such good value at just £400, this netbook is definitely worth a look. The Mini has only one DIMM slot available. However, because of Microsoft restrictions for Windows XP on netbooks, the XP versions are only sold with 1 GB of RAM, even though the motherboard supports up to 2 GB and can be manually upgraded by the user. The RAM required is DDR2 (PC2-4200) at 533 MHz, or PC2-5300s, which runs at 667 MHz. The memory used must always be 200-pin SODIMM. [4] [edit] Storage The HP Mini 210 1000ew uses a 2.5", 9.5mm internal hard drive and is shipped with 250GB as standard which can be upgraded to 500GB using the restore disks. [edit] Motherboard The motherboard uses the Intel 945GSE northbridge and ICH7-M southbridge chips, providing Intel GMA950 IGP and IDT HD Audio respectively. The motherboard model is HP361A. It uses a built in Intel GMA 950 video chip. [edit] Display The Mini features either a 8.9- or 10.1-inch LED-backlit display. The 8.9" display has a resolution of 1024x600 pixels, the 10.1" is 1024x576 (10.2" @ 1024x600 is no longer sold). Both models feature stereo speakers, a webcam, and a single audio jack for both mic and headphones. Both the unit and the dock connector can carry a VGA connection. A first-party adaptor is available from the HP online store. A ZIF SATA connector is used as opposed to standard PATA/SATA connector cables, But still accepts standard 2.5inch SATA hard discs. A 6-cell battery can be ordered as an accessory, or (with the Mini 1000 and Digital Clutch only) chosen in place of the 3-cell battery during configuration. The 3-cell and 6-cell batteries provide up to 3 hours and 6 hours of run-time, respectively. [edit] Software The Mini has Microsoft Windows XP installed at launch, while Mi (a special HP operating system based on Ubuntu Linux, named for "mobile Internet" containing "HP MediaStyle" based on Elisa[5][6]) was released in early January 2009 on the HP Mini 1000 "Mi Edition." In late October, HP started shipping the Windows 7 Starter operating system on the HP Mini 110. Windows 7 Starter OS can be upgraded to the Home Premium version on the HP Mini 210 1000ew. [edit] Connectivity In addition to the aforementioned card reader, the system has two standard USB ports, a 10/100 Mbit Ethernet port, a single 3.5mm audio in/out mini-jack, and a power connector. The Mini 1000 also has a proprietary dock connector which can carry VGA, USB, RJ-45 (over USB), analogue audio in/out, and power. An 802.11b/g wireless NIC (Broadcom BCM4312) is included for Wi-Fi, while Bluetooth 2.0+EDR and a built-in HSDPA modem are options. It can be connected to Verizon for an one- or two-year contract. However, reviewers noted that the diminutive 1.8-inch hard drive, usually used in digital audio players, performed slower than the 2.5-inch drives in competitors and criticized the decision to charge separately for a VGA adaptor. UK versions are expected to arrive early next year. - HP Mini-Note 2133 review - HP unveils Mini 1101 As with every netbook scrounging for a slice of Eee PC pie, the specs are fairly familiar. What's interesting is that HP has now decided to drop the VIA C-7 M CPU in favour of the standard Intel Atom N270 processor. Alongside that, you've got your 10.2" widescreen display, a choice of 8GB or 16GB SSD, WiFi, Bluetooth and integrated webscam. You get a choice of RAM too, which goes up to 2GB if you choose the new MIE Linux operating system rather than Windows XP. The whole thing weighs a decent 1.1kg too. MIE stands for Mobile Internet Experience, which is a fancy new dashboard interface that gives you immediate access to your basic browsing and email tools as well as your various media playback options, without requiring you to fanny about waiting for a full blown OS to boot up. It's backed up by Ubuntu Linux. If you're looking for a more aesthetically inspiring system, then you may want to gun for the flowery pink, Vivienne Tam designer version. No idea why you'd want to do that other than for the fact the garish floral unit will be available a month earlier. It also includes a 60GB HDD and optional 3G connectivity. The standard HP Mini 100 will be on sale in the UK from February, priced £399. The Vivienne Tam edition is due out in January for the same price. If you want to save a few quid, you might want to consider the Compaq Mini 700, at £299. It shares nearly all the same specs, screen size, processor, etc, and with optional 3G internet. This one must have some weaknesses over the costlier Mini 1000 counterpart, but we're still awaiting the official explanation as to what they are. The Compaq Mini 700 will be out in December too, so at the moment this seems like the by far the better deal. More deets as we get them. Not that the announcement is a surprise; we predicted this after spotting the HP Mini 1000 advertised on HP's site earlier in the week. We didn't, however, expect there to be two systems, not that we're complaining. The HP Mini 1000 (above) and the Compaq Mini 700 (below), as the systems are called, are pretty much the same netbook under the surface, but the 700 goes that step further, offering integrated HSDPA. Otherwise the systems line-up as follows: 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU 10.2in screen 8GB or 16GB or SSD storage Bluetooth, wireless 1.1Kg, 25.55mm thin chassis The all-important figures?
